The Eames Polypropylene Side/Dining Chair DSW
When the advances in plastics technology, developed during the Second World War, became accessible to the general populace, the Eameses decided to use this material in their furniture.
Their first fibreglass chair was made in 1948 as a prototype for the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, organized by MoMa (Museum of Modern Art). Subsequently manufactured by Zenith Plastics, this chair was mass produced out of the same plastic employed by the company in its radars. This was the first commercial use of plastic for seating.
So, in 1950, the Eameses had achieved their goal of mass-producing furniture with curves.
This version has a base which has turned beech legs. We also offer the Eames Polypropylene Side/Dining Chair DSR with a base made from chromed metal rods in the manner of the Eiffel Tower.
